Amazon Web Services [AWS]: An Overview

What is AWS?
AWS is one of the major cloud computing service providers, with a wide spectrum of services that can enable you to build powerful applications on the cloud. It was officially launched in 2006, today they are one of the leaders in the cloud computing services industry.
As of 2020, they hold 32% of the total share in the market, given below shows an image containing the distribution of shares of the various cloud providers currently in the market.
AWS Global Infrastructure
From a birds-eye view the various services in AWS can be grouped into the following:

Storage: S3
Compute: EC2, Lambda
Databases: Aurora, DynamoDB
Satellite: Ground Station
Migration & Transfer: Snowball, Snowmobile
Network & Content Delivery: Cloudfront, Route53
Machine Learning: Sagemaker
Media Services: Elastic Transcoder
Security, Identity & Compliance: Identity Access Management
The global infrastructure consists of a Region, an availability zone and an Edge Location.
As of today, the AWS Cloud spans 80 Availability Zones within 25 geographic regions around the world, with announced plans for 18 more Availability Zones and 6 more AWS Regions in Australia, India, Indonesia, Spain, Switzerland, and United Arab Emirates (UAE). Availability Zone: One may consider an availability zone to be a group of data centers. A data center can be considered to be a building filled with servers.
Region: A region is a geographical area, it may consist of 2 or more availability zones.
Edge Location: These are the endpoints for AWS where content/data is cached. This consists of Cloudfront, Amazon’s Content Delivery Network. Currently there are more than 230 edge locations all over the world.
